Me: Oh, no it's purely just humans in this book. There are already so many themes I'm juggling here, adding straight up racial tension would be too much I think. Or, like, I guess the gods count?

Audrey finally begins to confront her past, quite literally, and struggles to keep her composure in the moment. This entire chapter was actually super hard to write as it drew on some very real feelings for me.

$Rodrick stared at her curiously,a golem of gleaming steel beneath a partial knight’s wing.It hung strangely at the wrong side of his head,Audrey thought.He rested his hand on the hilt of his blade,dangling across his lower back and cocked his head as he saw Audrey grab at her own hilt.She felt pieces of her falling away instinctively as the fear and anxiety clawed at the back of her mind and gritted her teeth pulling them back. She wanted to feel this moment.“Who are you?”Rodrick called to her across the quieting voices in the stands.Audrey flinched under his voice and clenched her jaw tasting iron as it ran across her tongue.Rodrick glanced up to the billboard above the administrators in the stands, mouthing silent words as he read.“You will know soon,”Audrey whispered back.Fire burned in her chest as the memories of years under the man’s command flashed through her mind,culminating in the single,crystal clear moment at their charge on the sea of glass.Pricks of pain shot through her wrist and forearm where she gripped the hilt of her saber.The horn called and Audrey’s world fractured.Audrey’s heart beat in her ears as the arena became a distant,inconsequential thing.There was only Rodrick,the narrow strip of land between them,and her fury.Rodrick grew in her vision,hunching slightly as he drew his blade,and she realized she was running toward him.She whipped her sword free from the scabbard and slashed in a frantic,feral series of strikes. Rodrick backed away,easily warding away each blow, grunting against the force of her sword.Rodrick was scrutinizing her as he backed away,she realized,searching for his opening.He planted his feet, parrying her blade and stepped forward, throwing his weight into a punch.Audrey watched the gauntlet as it closed on her and gritted her teeth as the blow landed against her cheek.She reeled back and caught herself.She began pacing around him,cutting off his path toward the center of the arena,unwilling to cede the ground she claimed.$

In moments, she knew,the horde would descend the slopes in a disorganized stampede to try and overrun them.Her hand gripped the hilt of the blade at her hip absently.Rodrick’s eye flashed toward her and she tensed,straightening her posture.High Marshal Isadorah strode forward from the rear of the regiment,glinting, gold-trim plate clanking with each step.She stopped near Rodrick, never bothering to look at the knight aspirants and muttered something into the gnarled hole at the side of his head.He sighed and nodded as Isadorah stared out at the opposite dune, stoic and, Audrey thought, gallant.“Men,” Rodrick bellowed, turning his back to the ranks.“You have come to me from every corner of the great Kingdom of Getannia.Some of you seek the glory of battle.Some of you seek the knight’s wing.”Audrey shifted her gaze to the high Marshal’s full steel wing pierced through her ear, holding back her wavy red locks.“You all have your reasons for joining.All of you, however, have spent the last years coming to an understanding have you not?”“Yes, sergeant!”the men shouted in unison.Though Audrey screamed in the collective, she couldn’t distinguish hers from the chorus.Rodrick tilted his head back toward Eos’ unrelenting, sweltering heat and wiped his brow.“A saint of Eos dies with their eyes open, facing her.”Rodrick’s voice was almost a whisper.“And lives as her wrath!”he shouted into the sky.“What are you?”Rodrick bellowed, jerking his head back toward them.“Wrath!”the men roared in response, a collective salute of open palms and hammered armor rattling the ranks.“Nordren som Zevois, what are you?”Rodrick screamed.“Wrath!”the man screamed from somewhere in the back ranks, the clatter of his armor punctuating his words.“Haut som Devois, what are you?”Rodrick screamed again.“Wrath!”the man roared.“Audrey som Tetrois, what are you?”“Wrath!”Audrey screamed, forming her salute.The muted thunder of hoofbeats on sand rolled across the desert,and then the horde descended the slope.

I truly love Aoife's character and how passively predatory she comes across. This is one of my favorite scenes around a pretty significant turn in their relationship.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t know if you, or we…” Audrey bit her lip. “I wasn’t sure how you felt. After.” Aoife hummed.

“I should say I felt quite good after,” she replied. Aoife slowed her pace and looped her arm through Audrey’s, holding her as they walked. Audrey smiled dryly at her.

“You know what I mean,” she mumbled. “I wasn’t sure if it was real.” Aoife pulled Audrey to a stop. Audrey shrunk under her gaze.

“It can be real if you want it to be,” Aoife said leadingly. Audrey stared at her for a moment, taking all of her in again. She desperately wanted their connection to be meaningful and more, but as she looked back into Aoife’s hawkish blue eyes, she felt the steady drip of adrenaline flooding her body, and the hairs on her neck rose. “What is it you want, Audrey?” Aoife asked.

“I want you,” she whispered suddenly, tensing the muscles beneath the scar, “but I am so afraid.” The admission made her face flush. It wasn’t a new realization, but it was new words finally put to something that had been laying deep within her, something that grew as it fed on her. Audrey wondered if there was enough of her left.

Aoife tilted her head to the side, her piercing eyes searching. Audrey’s heart raced, wondering what she would find in her. She tensed the muscles in her arm anxiously. Aoife’s gaze darted to the movement. She grabbed Audrey’s hand and pressed it to her breast.

“You could have me,” Aoife said. Her voice was low and cold again as she watched Audrey. “You just have to take what you want.” She stared at Audrey, bait and trap both. Audrey felt as if she were falling, her stomach tumbling about inside her. Aoife watched her with a satisfied expression as Audrey fell apart beneath her gaze. She stepped closer, until their lips almost touched, separated only by her veil and their breath. Audrey breathed her in, craving more of her.

“Audrey!” Aoife’s rough honey voice made Audrey’s knees nearly buckle. “I’m glad you could make it.”

Aoife’s simple satin and lace dress stole Audrey’s breath from her lungs. In her loose adherent gown, she could only catch glimpses of her form, but her dress now flattered her wide hips and curvy figure. Her sweeping skirt flowed away from her in a soft arc, leading to a lace train behind her. The bare skin above her bodice was only concealed by sheer fabric that led to a lace collar. Across the lace on her chest a labyrinthine filigree of Eos was emblazoned, each twisting tendril of the star glittering in opalescent gemstones. She fidgeted behind her veil with the silver and sapphire pendant affixed to her collar.

Audrey felt Jensen’s hand tighten on her arm.

“I… me, too! My lady!” Audrey said, nervously clenching her free hand. Jensen helped pull her up from her pained half bow. “You look so beautiful,” she said, her voice dripping with sincerity. Aoife smiled at her warmly, pressing her hand to the icon on her chest, bowing her head slightly. She had dusted her eyes to her temples with that same blue ink this evening and when looked up at Audrey through the veil, it gave her the impression of a predator stalking her in the night.

“Please, would you sit with me?” And then she looked to Jensen, “Please, your friend would be welcome, too.”

“It would be my honor, my lady,” he said smoothly and then bowed. He shot Audrey a wide-eyed glance as he did.
