Still working it out.

Health and safety further reviewed at early music rehearsal as notoriously testy conductor’s efforts to inject energy into chorus yield mixed results. #surprisingbaroquedrama #nightagent

Oof. Fantastic Jenůfa at ROH. Orchestra on fire under Jakub Hrůša and loved the production.

Regretting asking about the latest from the extended family ahead of the big reunion this evening…

Have you ever seen the old Supraphon Má Vlast (still used by many top orchestras)? It actually has a sort of anti-critical commentary…

Some great tunes to whistle on the way home. Thank you @londonsymphony.bsky.social for programming Helmut Lachenmann’s exuberantly inventive ‘My Melodies’ and for such a great performance, especially from the fine horn soloists, expertly led by Ilan Volkov.

Happy place with Fulham Symphony at Smith Square Hall today with a fantastic programme of Rautavaara, Lutosławski, Kaprálová and Martinű. A small handful of tickets left.

This score of Jeanne Demessieux’s ‘Poème’ arrived yesterday and I’m looking forward to literally blowing the dust off it next year with soloist Hannah Gill.

Lucky to be conducting this gorgeous programme at Smith Square Hall next month. (Lucky too to have an artist, Caroline Whitehead, in the orchestra to make such beautiful posters.)

Veni creator spiritus. The music that emerged from these two rooms… very grateful to the warm and generous experts who showed us these magical places, Mahler’s composing hut in Maiernigg and Janáček’s house in Brno.

A small pilgrimage to look in on a couple of great composers this morning in the Prague Vyšehrad cemetery, but my favourite memorial was the grave of the exuberantly talented athlete/diplomat Josef Rössler-Ořovský, who looks like he attempted one acrobatic ski jump too many…

Was badly soaked by rain on visit to Jane Austen’s house today, so hope to avoid developing a dangerous chill. But what a lovely place, and a brilliant museum. janeaustens.house

Interesting to hear Shostakovich 4 with authentic sense of existential dread. LSO performance tonight was virtuosic beyond belief.

A fantastic concert from the Riot Ensemble this afternoon at the Wigmore Hall. Committed, virtuosic performances of two very difficult to play pieces by Brian Ferneyhough and Hilda Paredes. Wonderful to hear the Paredes twice and would like to hear it again.

Strong on oaks, strong on the causes of oaks. Absolutely brilliant morning planting trees in Morden Park thanks to fantastic treesforcities.org. Our oak was seeded from the 500-year-old oaks in the park, imagine its acorns being used in 2524 by a little girl to plant for the next 500.

Looking forward to ROH Tosca this week. Gustav Holst seems to have enjoyed this piece also.

Looking forward to a very nice concert with WimbledonSO this evening including this love letter to Mozart by Richard Strauss, his ‘Happy Workshop’ Sonatine for 16 winds.
