“Jesus's cautious ‘Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar's’ is complemented by his firm ‘and to God the things that are God's.’ This posture is different from anticipatory obedience. It draws a line-what authorities may or may not rightly demand-and commits to not crossing that line . . .

How can Advent be an act of resistance in this moment of division and rising authoritarianism, when so many of us feel cynical and numb? @rickpidcock.bsky.social has me on his show, Highest Power. A great 30 minutes that I think is worth your time.

Good morning.

“Protect the weak. For Christians, this is not about self-preservation in the long run. It is about following Jesus, who went to the outcasts, and died as one. It is a commitment to remain with those who suffer and to embrace the suffering that might come with it . . .

Good morning.

“You will have to distinguish all the things: God from idols, faith from ideology, violence from true power, the quiet of fear from true peace, noise from threat. The differences are clear for those who keep their eyes on the cross…

Good morning!

Wisdom about the overwhelm of events: “The storm is not an illusion; its dangers are real. Even so, it is also a distraction. No one can pay attention to all the things all the time. The highest waves raise your alarms— and may hide more inconspicuous but forceful blows.

Today's No King March in Portland #PDX. 2025-10-18. Many people (40-50K), no violence (except for some later in the day caused by federal officers at the ICE center), a lot of people asking for the government to be better.

Starting this one today. I’ve been told it’s really good. But I gotta say even the Foreword floored me. If the rest of the book is even half as good as that, this may be one of the most important works of theology of recent times. 👀🤯

Why do so many attendees over the years report that this is the best writers' gathering they've ever experienced? Why are more than half of the spots each year taken by returning participants?

One reason is the simple schedule that focuses you on writing.

"A Full Weekend of Uninterrupted Writing Is A Dream!" "Most productive writers' conference I've experienced." "Best gift I've given myself professionally or personally in a long time."

What are they talking about? The Writers' Advance. A writer's weekend where you actually write!

Hey all, it's my birthday. 54 years old. Wow. Still alive and doing my best to help the world be a better place. If you have a few extra bucks, for my birthday I would love to have you buy one of my books. They're good stuff, I promise! 😄

Officer!! I need to report a break in.

What? No, nothing was stolen. No, nothing was broken. No, I don’t have video.

But they left this card in my kitchen table for me to discover when I work up!! Please! You must arrest them.
