okay but what if the nun had to muzzle the spider girl in order to keep from being eaten while she studied them? but is now continually taunted by the allure of being consumed by that gorgeous monster.

there is a kingdom wide network of the clergy who are working with the abbess to undermine papal authority which they view as a corruption of the church's true teachings - the veneration of Mary. they think they're helping raise an army that will overthrow the king and kick out the pope's servants.
The abbess is very kind but mutters something under her breath about external intakes messing with her timetables before leading him to a cell

A young monk, oft praised for his special devotion to the Virgin Mary, makes his way slowly along the coast road, his heart strangely heavy: he had tried to explain to the Bishop how he felt like he was like Jonah trapped in the whale, being trapped inside this monstrous body
those men also seem to vanish a lot as well.
it's a very strange mystery, one might think the vikings are stealing the men but they seem to vanish months before a raid, and then the raid just never takes anything of note.
better send a few more men to investigate.

Shield-maidens preparing for battle, painting their runes on their shields so that the nuns know not to struggle (too much) while the new girls in the longship have first time jitters worrying about "what if I don't find the right nun?", not quite sure what runes to use just yet.
Nuns flagging with their rosaries and various medals of Saints what particular type of activities with shield-maidens they are interested in so the right shield-maiden marauds the correct nun

The Abbess has a contact with the shield-maidens to take away certain nuns during 'raids' so the total amount of nuns needed to become a city is never quite reached

A medieval Sisters of Dorley: troublesome 'men' are repurposed by an Abbess with the full support of the local factions (guilds, priests, merchants) because more nuns means city status (and various exemptions and privileges)
and have it near the coast for shield-maiden raids
