This is such an important concept for collaborative story telling… kids do it intuitively when they play pretend… More GMs need to actively push this mindset in their games!
Two different but somewhat related concepts revolutionized #TTRPGs for me: fictional positioning and narrative permission. Once I internalized framing what's happening within my games in those terms, many issues fell away. It doesn't matter if the system is trad, non-trad, rules-light, crunchy, etc.

A world suffused with magic, technology isn’t building machines it’s harnessing the natural powers and making it available to the average person. An iron plow is great but a plow with a blade that repels solid matter so never gets stuck and so can be pulled by any small animal is world changing!

Remember GMs, if you're looking to challenge your players with complex puzzles you don't need to waste hours thinking of Machiavellian schemes. Just get a childrens puzzle book for age five. This will usually overwhelm the average player. Speaking from experience as both GM & player 😆

While I’m at it BBEGs should be competent and intimidating. They can be complex and sympathetic or just evil for the sake of evil, but if they don’t wield their power effectively and show they can achieve their goals why would the PCs even be worried about them?

Introduce your BBEGs early and often. At the start they should be nigh invincible, but every new appearance your players can learn their about them and develop their strategy. Then by the time of the final showdown the PCs are as much an enemy of the BBEG as the other way around.

The hardest part of home brewing your own RPG world isn’t outlining the key differences that make it unique and worth playing in over other established settings, it’s trying to not write a 20 book epic saga of lore and history thereby writing out all your players room and agency to be the heroes!

Fortress Thiasau was built by an order of Paladins secretly worshiping a god of chaos and strife. The order is long gone, but the sturdy fortress remains, repurposed as a hideout for Marik the Viper and his gang of ne'er-do-wells.

Make boss fights more exciting with multiple phases. Sure you killed the body of the evil sorcerer, but now his spirit is free to inhabit the 13’ foot titanium golem he’s been robbing the local villages to build! And when that’s destroyed…. Some sort of large terrier maybe….
