This initiative aims to raise public awareness among the different audiences in Honduras, Belize and Panama about the importance of sharks and rays, measure changes in the behavior of fishers and consumers, and empower communities to take an active role in conservation.

With the support of the MBZ Species Conservation Fund, we are leading a pioneering conservation initiative in the Darién province of Panama - safeguarding the only currently demonstrated nursery for the Critically Endangered largetooth sawfish (Pristis pristis) in the Americas.

With the support of the MBZ Species Conservation Fund, we are leading a pioneering conservation initiative in the Darién province of Panama - safeguarding the only currently demonstrated nursery for the Critically Endangered largetooth sawfish (Pristis pristis) in the Americas.
🆘 According to the IUCN Red List, sawfishes are among the most threatened marine vertebrates globally, with populations declining by more than 90% due to overexploitation and habitat loss. Without urgent conservation action, they face extinction.

We showcased our fieldwork in marine conservation, including the deployment and introduction of the BRUV into the ocean. Our partner fishermen provided invaluable support, offering an excellent demonstration of this monitoring technique.
