Small Press Fest was this weekend and this is part of my haul. These are prints made by some very talented U of I students and I can’t wait to get them framed and see them on my walls!

Our bat of the day is the fancily named Pipistrellus etula, a species only recently discovered by PhD student Laura Torrent at the BiBio Research Group. The name "etula" honors the inhabitants of its native Bioko Island and means "god of the island" in Bantu, the local language. tinyurl.com/pipetula

Today's bat photo comes from The Hindu newspaper and features a tree with my favorite of all bats-- the Indian Flying Fox! Because I'm sure I'll share more photos today's extra tidbit is that I used to see them flying at dusk outside my flat in Kolkata and they do look like chihuahuas with wings!

Today’s bat pic comes from the Nevada Department of Wildlife and features the super speedy Mexican Free-Tailed Bat. Eat your heart out cheetahs, these lil friends can reach speeds of up to 100mph on wing power alone. If you ever visit the Bracken Bat Cave you’d see 15-20 million of them 😍

Today we appreciate one of Illinois’ native bats, the little brown bat. They eat lots of insects. Sadly, due to the spread of white-nose syndrome the population has decreased by over 90% putting them at risk. Read about some cool research at Illinois to save these cuties. tinyurl.com/lilbrownbat

It's Bat Appreciation Month! To celebrate, I'm gonna try to share a bat a day. I'm three days late, but better late than never. Plus, I appreciate bats 24/7, 365. First up, here's a great image of bats from the Biodiversity Heritage Library which is currently directed by @treiceratops.bsky.social!

Today’s reminder that history repeats itself came when flipping back through Hillary Chute’s “Why Comics?” When she explains the punchline of the first recognized satirical political cartoon. Trump is gilding his stupid ballroom while making Americans poorer, sicker, and less informed.

Disinformation isn’t always a Trumpian lie, it’s also misleading/incendiary headlines. I love NPR but if you read the article, the vast majority of Americans are still against political violence. This headline shapes a public perception in which violence is inevitable & the left is equally at fault.

Made a little display of popular materials to welcome our students back to campus and let them know we have fun stuff in the library. Here’s to another academic year 🥰

One of the things that makes it hard to fully delete Facebook is the hyper local nonsense one only ever sees on their neighborhood’s group page 🐢 👻

Behind the scenes library tour at the Michigan State University library special collections with the @cssorg.bsky.social Research Librarians Cohort. What a treat! Special thanks to Jason for giving us the opportunity and for the cheesecake!

Happy Sundog from Viago aka Steve Buscemi aka Chicken Man. He’s so cute when he’s not scavenging for scat.

Wow. The Social Security Administration is sending propaganda emails now. Disgusting. Gobsmacked by how many free, independent adult are using their one short precious life to shill for a bunch of grifting, creepy assholes. Who is this for? Every day I feel gaslit by our government.

Saw this promoted post on Reddit and anyway when is the US going to issue a level 4 travel advisory against itself because this list of “experiences” looks like the Republican agenda at the moment…

Reading “Suffrage Song: The Haunted History of Gender, Race and Voting Rights in the United States of America” by @caitlincass.bsky.social and this spread was just my kind of absurdist/dark humor.

The ring I fell in love with online wasn’t initially what I would have guessed and I was nervous but I love it so much, it’s absolutely perfect. And I think Alex had a good experience working with them.

Spooky looking scene from Chaitanya Library but the scariest part is the thought of these precious collections disintegrating before they can be preserved. Will I be able to help as part of the preservation efforts? Let us find out!

I’m going to take it as hopeful sign that their phone lines are so busy it’s taking ages to get through and voicemail is full. And I’ll keep calling until I get through because I gather phone is even more impactful than email. So this is my new hobby, I guess. They better not fucking confirm RFK.
