My monster design entry for the #monstermayhem contest that was run by @fourleafisland.art and @frogcroaks.bsky.social back in october!! This is The Haven Crawler (aka The Crab) which ended up winning Lemmy's judges choice!!

An encyclopedia style reference sheet for a creature called the haven crawler. The text reads: "The Haven Crawler (Adenium Mimitis) is a land dwelling desert crab typically found within desert oases. It is an ambush predator that mimics rare desert flowers to lure in its prey. It is one of the most venemous creatures known to mankind. Fig 1: A fully grown Haven Crawler. Soft, fleshy petals frame a set of four way split eyelids. Its bright, hard shelled carpace and spindly barbed legs are designed to easily burrow into the sand. Fig. 2: Size when compared to the average fully grown human. Fig. 3a: The Haven Crawler lures its prey by burying itself belly up in the sand, leaving only its head and tail visible. Thinking they have found an easy meal, herbivorous rodents and other desert creatures will approach to try to eat the pair of flowers. Fig. 3b: By the time its prey approaches to try and nibble at its petals, their fate is already sealed. The closed flower bud bursts open, revealing the creature's mouth. Its long, sharp tongue shoots out and pierces the skin of its prey, envenomating it and often killing it before it can even feel the pain. Its venom also serves a dual purpose - liquifying its prey's insides to then be slurped out like the world's most messed up juice box. Fig. 4: While the Haven Crawler's usual prey tends to be small rodents and other various desert creatures, it is more than capable of killing humans as well. It has adapted to prey on unaware tourists and travelers who try to pick its flowers or get a bit too close for a photo. It is all too common to find dried out corpses near patches of flowers and plant life, no matter how much effort is made to warn people.
