An "Immaculate Grid" answer. The game is to name nine players, in just nine attempts, each of whom satisfies a double condition. The conditions are set by the intersecting lines and columns of a 3x3 grid. If your player is correct, a little headshot of him appears. Sam Jethroe, 1953 Bowman. Sam is probably 35 here, in the 1952 season; he didn’t end up appearing in the majors in 1953 and wouldn’t be there again except for one game. Sam ended his career with five happy years in Toronto. Long remembered and cherished by the baseball community here. #alttext
Sam Jethroe 1953 Bowman baseball card. These cards had plain full color photo fronts and the photograph is beautiful early 1950s style portraiture. It is at the ballpark but the background is very dim. Jethroe is depicted in uniform from mid-chest up, leaning on a bat. His right arm crosses his chest to hold the bat and obscures the “Braves” logo across the chest. Jethroe is a beautiful medium complexioned black man with a wide white smile that creases his broad cheeks and extends his handsome lips. His nose is straight and medium proportioned; he looks off to the left of frame. His skin glows with potrait spotlight, he looks healthy and radiant and considerably less than his 35 years old. He is wearing a baseball cap of truly heart beauty. The red brim and the green lining are both just visible along the curve of it framing Jethroe’s forehead. The cap is dark navy blue with a clean white “B” embroidered as a cap badge. His undershirt is also navy blue and over it is a heather grey uniform, with red and blue “Y” chest piping. The sleeve logo, which I won’t describe, is thankfully not visible except by a smear of colour on his left arm. Sam looks happy and confident and sexy and winning and like his 35 years aren’t catching up to him. His major league career is almost over. This is a gorgeous memory.

Home Run Baker of the Athletics. The card is the 1911 American Tobacco “Gold Borders” I love these white flat caps with black piping that Mack’s great champs wore. Baker’s portrait is intense and handsome; this is a beautiful but also cute card.
1911 “Gold Borders” baseball card. It is skinnier than modern cards. The player is Frank “Home Run” Baker of I believe the then two time champion Athletics about to be three? Only his neck and face and hairline appear as a true portrait but it is beautiful ; Baker is white with dark brown hair, two arched scorches of dark eyebrows curved like the cuts in a violin, dark brown eyes and pink lips and gentle seashell pink cheeks and a muscular chin and neck. He stares intently up to the right of the frame. The rest of the card are drawn elements and borders. The flat round Athletics cap with five layers of black piping running all the way across and around is drawn atop his head, an high collar 1900s baseball uniform under and around his neck. There is a framing device, a stylized infield, drawn behind him. In the top left is the Athletics’ “white elephant”. In the top right, black text “ATHLETICS”. The chest of the drawn uniform is framed by two ash baseball bats crossed at the knobs and parallel to the bottom baselines of the framing infield. Across them is a pink flowing motto banner bearing the text BAKER PHILA. AMER A tiny adorable picture of the Baker Bowl, which must have been brand new at the time, is in the bottom left. The card background is dark greenish blue and it is framed in gold, now faded with time. A beautiful card.

Ferguson Jenkins, Topps 1967. Quiet intensity. This is just after his trade from Philadelphia. #alttext
A 1967 trading card. “CUBS” in jaunty capitals orange-yellow capitals across the bottom. “FERGUSON JENKINS • P” in smaller white text on the top. Jenkins is a young tall rangy black man of medium complexion, with a wide nose, arched eyebrows, pretty and full lips and cheekbones you could sink your teeth into. His hair is short. He leans into the frame, bent over, and his handsome face is a picture of intensity, his eyes looking just slightly to your right. His hands are close together as if he is fielding. He is dressed in a light gray button-up uniform, the tone shifting to almost blue, with CHICAGO across the front in red and navy blue and a red and navy blue stripe on the collar and sleeves. He has 3/4 length blue undersleeves and a blue cap with the red Cubs “C” on the front. His signature, “Fergie Jenkins”, elegant legible and handsome with a beautiful “J”, is printed on the card across his thighs. Beautiful player.

Sadaharu Oh, 1963 Menko. Maybe my favorite player? I think this is the first card depicting his famous “flamingo” one-footed batting stance. He adopted it out of desperation during 1962; a former phenom, he struggled in his early seasons with the Giants. He became the greatest ever. #alttext
A man, moderately tall and rather elegant and Chinese, stands in the batting cage ready to receive a pitch. He is dressed in a baseball uniform, a white jersey and white pants with a fun double racing stripe down the side. There is also double piping around the sleeve. His undershirt is dark blue as are his high stirrup socks. His cap is also a dark blue with the Giants’ “YG” logo in orange. He holds the bat delicately, unusually close to his shoulder (he bats left handed, with the bat over his left shoulder and his right side facing the camera). He has dark rimmed eyes and short hair, quite pretty. The eye is drawn relentlessly to the stance; he is standing on his left foot with his right leg raised in his stance as he awaits the pitch. Yes he looks in rather perfect balance. The photo background is black and white (his picture appears to be hand colored) and shows there to be a small crowd in the stands watching him take batting practice (could be pregame or a composite photo).

Dazzy Vance, strikeout king of interwar baseball. From the 1933 Goudey Gum set. #alttext
A baseball card featuring a bust portrait of Arthur “Dazzy Vance”. He is a handsome white man with a bright complexion and close set eyes and a great chin, short brown hair in tight curls and an ironic half smile on his lips. He is set against a red background and his shoulders are tilted jauntily. He is wearing a pinstripe cap with a Brooklyn “B” on it in blue. The uniform shirt is also in pinstripes, but softer Brooklyn pinstripes not the hard dark Yankees pinstripe. Across the bottom the card reads BIG LEAGUE CHEWING GUM.

John “Monte” Ward. Best all rounder of his time, as batter fielder pitcher captain and manager. #alttext
Allen & Ginter N28 of John M. (“Monte”) Ward. Ward is slight, befitting a shortstop. He is 27 in the portrait, lithe but now matured, white. He stands in profile with the bat over his left shoulder (so a lefthanded batter’s stance). He is dressed in a natural cotton uniform shirt and pants, and a flat top cap in similar colour. The trousers are belted with a broad medium brown belt with a metal buckle. The belt loops seem very large! The shirt billows a bit around his arm and especially his midsection. Brains not brawn. He has a cute mustache, pointed in the 1880s fashionable style. A portrait card with a plain background but letting you know the Allen & Ginter company make cigarettes in Richmond, Virginia.

Mike “King” Kelly. The original King; accept no substitutes. #alttext
An old baseball collector card from the 1880s. The player is identified as “KELLY, C, Boston”. He wears a brown jersey top laced delightfully up the front with white laces. He has brown hair and brown eyes and a long moustache that would cut you in half if you needed a second to die. He wears a 19th-century flat top cap and a red tie tucked carefully into his uniform which has BOSTON across the front. The brand is “OLD JUDGE & GYPSY QUEEN CIGARETTES” across the bottom. the sky behind him is blue with white smears of cloud. His lip is red and his chin square and you’d die happy biting his neck
