The issue is less the quantity of hues but that they be perceptually linear. Reg rainbow ramps are terrible at this, lots misc hot bands from low to high. Even your much smoother ramp has 3 bright bands by intensity. The low, the high, and at 6.

I have to confess something, as a cartographer who has loved maps and map making since childhood... I really don't care for the Tolkien maps as published w his books. They get way too much adoration in our profession 🫣 His personal/working sketches are far more interesting and organic. #cartography

The San Francisco Bay-Area viewshed. The brighter the pixel, the more of the bay surface you can see. If you can't see water, you're not in the "Bay Area"! :P #gischat

Def inverted. Having hard time figuring out where the light is coming from. Should be top left. It seems like maybe its just straight left? But I don't think that's the only problem. I think the overall softness of the shadows is making it worse. This is a high relief area, should be more contrast.

It's academia so I get paid the same either way. And I've been doing this long enough to recognize when there is no educating to be done! We're in the "just smile and wave" part of the job now.
