A fair choice. My problem in seablock was I felt really limited in space.

Your 1070 will work on Linux. My 1060 is still going strong. But yeah, I'm also hoping AMD comes out with something good.

Bear in mind that it depends what games you want to play. Specifically, some DRM can prevent you from running things on Linux, such as kernel level anti-cheat a la Riot Games, Epic Games.

The biggest pro of using Linux is just that it's easy to do what I want, and it's less easy to do what some random corporation wants me to do.
I realise that the latter's a strange thing to have to worry about, but I came from Windows.

Do factorio space age but you get like no copper on nauvis and like no coal on vulcanus. You have to ship stuff back and forth, *and* you need trains.

"install Microsoft teams/Microsoft word/adobe illustrator"

My response as an adult is to avoid anything that says Microsoft like the plague, but if you're the only kid who can't do the above task, it'll make it feel like you're the one with the problem.

You probably can't go a day without seeing it. But I'd argue it's more an issue of quantity than concentration. That is, bigger audience and better visibility, not more stallman stans per capita.
February 23, 2025 at 2:21 PM
Hmm. If you get your kids to use Linux, they may find it difficult to perform tasks or use applications which are oriented for Windows, which they would find from friends or be required to use/do by their school. Which would in turn set them against Linux.

I've gotta say, though, beats having no package manager on Windows. That my distro had a central package manager at all was a huge quality of life improvement when I first came to Linux.
I do my best to stay within its confines to avoid the aforementioned conflicts.

I don't know much about audio software, but I take it this means the Real Time kernel versions aren't all they're cracked up to be? :/
I wonder how other OS's get around this despite being heavier to run?

Hard to distinguish, as I've only tried two.

I'll look into it next time I feel like switching.
February 23, 2025 at 8:02 AM
That's possible. It was a Ryzen 5 1600, and I distinctly remember having minor compatibility issues between the CPU and the motherboard at the time I was building the system. Still, that CPU was only 5 years old at the time.

I use the terminal a lot by choice, but if I'm thinking about the times I actually need to do so within the normal running of my machine, they come up only once every few months.
And that's because I'm on Manjaro, and the devs keep breaking things and making forum posts with command line fixes.

It has a few different meanings. Consider, for example, the monumental amount of largely unpaid development time going into applications focused on the Linux ecosystem.
It's true; free as in cost has never been the point.

What kind of tinkering? Something in the registry? I'm genuinely curious.
I thought maybe I just didn't have enough space on my boot drive for the new version to download successfully prior to install or something.

Coming from Thunderbird to outlook for some work stuff, I find it confusing too.
February 23, 2025 at 2:53 AM
One of my personal reasons for switching to Linux is that windows updates stopped working. Still don't know why, it just kept trying to install the same minor version each week for months. I decided installing a new OS was better than installing an old one.

Always wash your hands with alcohol after using a windows box.

This was a nice one, that prime factor of 7 gives plenty of interesting numbers to work with.

Be aware when using a VM there's always overhead. If your apps are particularly demanding (which they may be if you need high thread count), you may need another solution.
