The button bush plants were one of the few smaller plants left in the circled area at Eagle Marsh, as that entire area was the target of a controlled burn that left nothing but the few patches of bigger trees and a few shrubs around the edges in a couple of spots.

The area looked pretty desolate when I arrived so I took a lynch break to sit there for a while and decide what to do next. As it turned out, there was a lot going on bird wise. (Foreshadowing). Section of the marsh across from the nature center was also burnt down to bare ground. Ordinarily, this part is filled with dense marsh reeds. Last year, it was all filled in. Five years ago, it was an open spot with a big puddle and had more green herons, sora, and Virginia rails than I've ever seen before or since. I counted over twenty green herons one day in just that spot and the adjacent areas right across the path. This is what the spot looked like on May 28, 2020. You couldn't see anything else around the puddle because it was all dense reeds. So I sat on one of the benches and waited and watched the green herons, great blue herons, several sora, and a couple of Virginia rails when they came out of the reeds, grabbed all the insects the wanted off the surface of the muck, them wandered back into the jungle. But they kept coming back--or at least somebody who looked just like them did.
