Brian Stowell was always under the impression that they were learners. I think he may have known people who knew Nelson. I set about trying to find some sort of evidence to the contrary…but sadly drew a blank, so was inclined to take his word for it.

Well he was sent by the Vienna sound archive. He was given extremely modern equipment (for the time), and it was a very cleverly thought out expedition.

It is said that the Manx recording were made from a learner not a native speaker. Personally I have my doubts that that was the case. Why would a serious researcher do that?

The recordings are pricey though! Very clear for their age.
