I love how you're struggling to think of nice things to say about this one, it really says it all 😂

Yet another deep cut, and I'm all for it ❤️

The way I answer it, is to address BOTH subjects. First, establishing R.M. is a plagiarist (not hard, even not counting the identical *everything*, MIJET's font metrics are also his unique work unseen anywhere else even MacOS) AND disprove him defaming other translators to normalize his plagiarism.

I couldn't care less *who* made that argument, or what to "leave out". Light is the best disinfectant.

Rod Merida is grasping at straws by overdramatizing MIJET using an existing font (by Apple, NOT "another MD game") *everyone* used then, for downplaying his own plagiarism of actually unique work.

I have to say the idea to change the exposure/lighting and have as much variations / animation is amazing, even moreso if you automated the process

(Yoshi's Island does the dancing letters in the score tally screen that way)
March 2, 2025 at 10:25 AM
Why would you inflict this horror upon yourself

Just use a full atlas image (with fixed grids and anchor points) and duplicate it for the extra animation frames, that way you can take shortcuts for certain letters (especially when there's more localizations later) without specific code.

THAT one got dumped? I remember some incomplete blurry screenshots of it and it seemed like the whole thing was a made up fever dream
March 2, 2025 at 10:19 AM
..a different subject I'm addressing, so maybe you need some reading comprehension, anger management, and less temptation to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory (it's an easy slam dunk - this here is an obvious "MIJET is a thief too, so no honor among thieves" deflection that won't go unanswered)
March 2, 2025 at 10:10 AM
Rod stole the font engine yes, I'd go as far as say he stole MIJET's work and modified it, that much should be obvious from the language select routine alone (MIJET's original work)

Rod also pretends MIJET stole the Chicago font and the VWF engine. That's a different subject, easily rebuked too.
March 2, 2025 at 10:06 AM
Which are salient points here because they directly rebuke that MIJET "stole" anything.

You might lash out this way and condemn that these points are even humored with a response considering the utter lack of credibility and expertise, yet it must be done since it still fooled multiple parties.

- a common late-eighties font (like Arial, Verdana), something a supposed MS-DOS hipster would know
- vwf in SMD games are a rare sight and mostly in MIJET romhacks
- vwf asm routines in SMD games rely on SMD gfx being 4bpp to avoid bitwise logic for simple byte writes (which are a basic technique)
March 2, 2025 at 9:56 AM
Whatever your own feelings or frustrations about how internet strangers take apart Rod Merida's arguments (& you need more anger management), it's clear that visual similarity is his entire argument for MIJET "stealing" the font engine (not the font), thus there's worth in pointing out it's:
March 2, 2025 at 9:56 AM
Rod Merida mentions "line breaks" in assembly code (rather than jmp/jsr), I'm well aware this clown has no idea what he's talking about and just lifted the ROM wholesale, not just the "font code"... much less talent to convert a c65816 (SNES) asm routine to 68k (SMD) asm for Gleylancer.
March 2, 2025 at 9:48 AM
Most SMD games I know of, even RPGs, were fixed width font affairs. The exceptions were rare, like the Shining series or... the very MIJET fan translations he's insulting right now (like Yu Yu Hakusho, or Pulseman which is prerendered by the way) and the rare other games. Absolutely shameful.
March 1, 2025 at 9:12 PM
MIJET's Gleylancer uses the Chicago font which happens to look good as a monospaced font or a 2-4-6-8px wide font (suitable for SMD as in Ys 3 -which underused it- because they're full byte chunks of 4bpp graphics), that's a macos font so common then that's as much of a gotcha as "you use arial"

There is an English prototype that's feature complete other than having a "thanks for playing the demo" lockout screen that appears in level 80 (out of 100...!!) that can be disabled with cheats to see the fully translated ending.
