🌊 I'm Manon, I study plankton ecology and the biological carbon pump using imaging data. I did my PhD about Rhizaria, the coolest plankton group in the ocean (pic from doi.org/10.1002/lno.12284), and now I study how phytoplankton blooms affect the biological carbon pump in the Northwest Atlantic.

or these Phaeodaria that seem to intercept sinking marine snow aggregates. 🌊

We usually use in situ imaging to obtain #plankton or particle abundance data, but sometimes we get a glimpse of how they interact with each other, like this huge group of Phaeodaria (Rhizaria) surrounding this crustacean (are they eating it?), 🌊

This work contributes to a long-term dataset in the area that helps track changes and improve our understanding of how the ocean stores #carbon, crucial for predicting future shifts in both ocean and climate systems.

We collected data on all compartments, from carbon chemistry to #plankton and #fishes, using various instruments and experiments, and targeted sampling of a phytoplankton bloom identified using satellite imagery.

Connecting #Arctic and #Atlantic waters, it's one of the few places on Earth where heavier surface waters sink to form deep water, driving global oceanic circulation and transporting CO2 to the deep ocean. It’s also highly productive, with spring phytoplankton blooms supporting a rich food web.

The #Labrador Sea is a key region for global #ocean systems and #climate. In May, as a joint effort between the Transforming Climate Action project and Fisheries and Oceans Canada, we went onboard L’Atalante to study physical, chemical, and biological processes from the atmosphere to the deep ocean.
