For the last couple decades I’ve identified and shared Horses hoof as Fomes fomentarius.
Recently the N American species name changed to Fomes excavatus.

The old name got hooved! 😉

Bears head tooth, Hericium americanum, growing on paper birch. Cross section looks like cauliflower. At least 10” across. Birch stump also hosting Chaga Inonotus obliquus and True tinder conk Fomitopsis excavata.

Looking for a 100x 210/0 objective lens for a Nikon microscope, preferably planar, oil immersion, but non-oil or achromatic would be ok. For non-profit volunteer organization.

A few months ago while foraging for fungi we found this red squirrel dead with its head stuck in moss. In a very remote location, and there were species of Amanitas, some nibbled. It’s unusual, I feel it ate too much of a toxic mushroom and buried its head in moss to escape pain. Sad to find. 💔

It occurred to me that when I’m portaging canoe or packs and I’m also foraging for plants or mushrooms that I’m FORTAGING. Adding this word to the English lexicon in this meaning.
