Maybe we should ask Machine Girl for their opinion

Infinite Potentiality and Psychic Attack by Machine Girl could both be considered 10/4, but Infinite Potentiality has phrases of (4/4 + 6/4) (according to the drums!) Psychic Attack is just more glued together as 10/4 in my opinion.

I feel like The Collector is more definitively switching meters, measures of 7/4 and 6/4 alternating. I say this because the chorus replaces the 7/4 with two measures of 4/4, and it makes no sense to say that the chorus is in, what, 14/4 time? 7/4? Get outta here.

The Collector by Nine Inch Nails is so fucking cool dude. It's actually in 13/4 the same way The Becoming is. Try humming The Becoming's bassline to The Collector.

Eraser is in 6/4 but that's not odd, that's just weird.

Plenty of examples on NIN's The Downward Spiral, and understandably so.

March of the Pigs is in mixed meter; each phrase contains 3 measures of 7/8 and 1 of 4/4. (All The Pigs All Lined Up is this but in 4/4 if you're into that.)

The Becoming is mostly in "13/4" or phrases like (7/4 + 6/4).

Almost all of Nonagon Infinity by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.
Some include:
Invisible Face is in 7/4
Mr. Beat is in 7/4
Wah Wah is in 5/4
Plenty of tracks change meters mid way ! So look out.

I find it helps to just know songs in odd time signatures. If I don't know a song or can't find one, I just make one. I'll share some I like here.

What can be more useful is gluing many measures together (7/4 = 4/4 + 3/4) but that's for you to experiment with.

This helps when first trying to conceptualize a meter when composing, but sticking to this tends to emphasize that off-kilter quality odd meters can have. Sometimes that can be useful!

11/8 = 5/4 + 1e
= 6/4 - 1e
= 12/8 - 1e
^ (metric modulation feel)

13/8 = 7/4 - 1e
March 9, 2025 at 8:49 AM
These ones aren't as helpful

9/8 = 4/4 + 1e
= 5/4 - 1e
10/4 = 2 * (5/4) (Synonymous with 5/4 unless it's Psychic Attack by Machine Girl ???)
10/8 = 5/4 but chopped up differently
March 9, 2025 at 8:49 AM
(9/4 is Nowhere, and the higher these numbers get, the less useful this notation gets. Somewhat Damaged by Nine Inch Nails has phrases of 3 measures of 3/4. (3 * (3/4)) Succinctly, sure, that's 9/4, but try reading sheet music in 9/4 for something like Somewhat Damaged. Useless.)
March 9, 2025 at 8:49 AM
5/4 = 4/4 + 1 quarter beat
5/8 = 3/4 - 1 eight beat
= 2/4 + 1e
= 6/8 - 1e
7/4 = 4/4 - 1q
7/8 = 6/8 + 1e
= 4/4 - 1e
9/4 = 3 * (3/4) = 4/4 + 1e

Sometimes time signatures can be recognized or felt as modifications of other signatures. Really helpful if you're a math oriented person. I guess.
March 9, 2025 at 8:49 AM
I think the Mario Maker remix of the SMB Underground theme is in 6/4 rather than 3/4 (whole can of worms) because it's doing the 5/4 thing...but with an extra quarter beat. I mean, hum Take Five to the drums. That's not a waltz! When you hear a lot of odd times, you can feel that sorta thing.
March 9, 2025 at 8:28 AM
Not an odd time signature, but a better example: a lot of songs in 6/4 are grouped as 4 quarters + 2 quarters (NIN - Eraser, Lemon Demon - Lifetime Achievement Award, every 6/4 measure in NIN - The Becoming) Listen to songs like that, and learn what they feel like.
March 9, 2025 at 8:28 AM
* Feel (don't count!) patterns. Notice them, first. For example, a lot of 5/4 grooves follow the same rhythm as Take Five. (3 q + 2 q OR 3e + 3e + 2e + 2e) If you can feel Take Five, you can feel Here We Are by Toby Fox (First example that came to mind..)
March 9, 2025 at 8:28 AM
* Subdivide it. In The Becoming by Nine Inch Nails, nodding your head to the eighth-beat pulses / squeaks makes everything work out just fine.

Hi! If you're having trouble feeling odd time signatures, I find listening to or playing music in those odd time signatures by ear (humming / beatboxing counts!) can be super duper helpful. Finding ways to naturally move your body to it can help, and it's often easier than you'd think.
