The @esa.int Gaia satellite will take its final scientific measurements on Wednesday. 🔭

This will conclude a 12 year series of continuous observations.

Larger Gaia data releases are still in progress, but Gaia has already had a HUGE impact on our understanding of the #milkyway.

Paul Dirac's paper "The Quantum Theory of the Electron," in which he derived the relativistic equation for spin 1/2 particles like the electron, was submitted #OTD in 1928.

It’s one of the most important results of 20th century physics, taking the deceptively simple form:
i ℏ γ.∂ψ - m c ψ = 0

Klingen volle Sektgläser beim Anstoßen höher oder tiefer als leere Sektgläser?
Und woran liegt das?

A new claim that dark energy isn’t necessary, we just need to properly account for inhomogeneities in the universe. Maybe. But his idea has been discussed for a long time - David Wiltshire, an author here, has been pushing it for 20 years, and others have also looked at it. (1/n)

Mathematician, physicist, and computer scientist, the great polymath (omnimath is more like it) John von Neumann was born #OTD in 1903.

He considered his quantum mechanics contributions to be most important. To get a sense of the breadth of his work look at his Wikipedia “known for” list. 🧪 ⚛️ 💻 🧮

2024 will be the second straight "hottest year" on record.

People around the world suffered an average of 41 extra days of dangerous heat this year because of climate change.
2024 was alarmingly hot all over the world
Scientists don't fully understand why it surpassed previous years by such a wide margin.

A team led by physicist Chien-Shiung Wu obtained the first experimental confirmation of “parity violation,” in the decay of Cobalt-60, #OTD in 1956.

Her theory colleagues received a Nobel for the prediction, but she was left off the prize. 🧪 ⚛️ 👩‍🔬

Mathematician John Conway was born #OTD in 1937. 🧪

He made broad and profound contributions across all of mathematics, but he is maybe best known by the general public for his "game of life" cellular automaton.

Conway passed away in 2020, from COVID-19.

Traveling at 8.2M km/h (0.8% of light speed), Rudolph’s nose could shift colors due to the Doppler effect—a festive blend of physics and magic!
