With only 20 min left of Slighty Spooky September, I'm not going to finish my final pick. I'm only about halfway through Peter S Beagle's TAMSIN but it is, par for the course with Beagle, excellent. A light&beautiful book about a tumultuous time in a young girl's life, and just *slightly* spooky. 🖤

I'm generally a big fan of Carey's work despite finding it to always feel a bit uneven. This, ironically, is the most "even" thing I've read of his to date, but also the least interesting. It's a fun enough fast little read but a bit too obvious and the spookybits are over too quickly, even for SSS

I mean what's there to say? A modern classic for a reason - a vampire hangout movie for the ages. A movie that makes laying down look like the most glamorous, enviable thing imaginable. When you're not swooning over their hair you'll be drowning in ennui. The platonic ideal of a Slightly Spooky pick

Next up: Priya Sharma's Pomegranates. I was pretty hype for this because I loved Sharma's prev work - and this was another hit! Perhaps not quite as spooky as I was hoping for a SSS pick (her short story collection All the Fabulous Beasts is Slightly Spookier), but a great little story regardless

I thought this was... fine. I was super invested in the first 1/4th and then when it got to the love story I lost interest. Has a couple of standout moments though and one extremely creepy villain

I've had a copy of Ballingrud's 1st short story collection languishing on my to-read pile for years now, but I could not resist the descriptor of "True Grit meets The Martian Chronicles with a touch of cosmic horror" - and it was a BANGER! I tore through this little page-turner. A perfect SSS pick!
