It's almost as if lots of people were asleep when their history teacher was covering Smoot-Hawley

It's against the law, right, to share war plans on private phones. So every bozo on that call did know or should have known what they were doing was illegal. And now they are gaslighting us, saying we must be confused to be worried about their lack of professionalism.

The Federal Government cannot be, simultaneously, "too big" and understaffed. The VA, Post Office, CDC, National Parks, Corrections, and maybe even the military regularly report being understaffed. Both cannot be true.

When Republican lawmakers were applauding for Trump's lies, do you think they knew they were lies? How could they not?

Disgusting but not surprising to hear Putin's words coming out of Trump's mouth.

So they fired folks who keep our water safe, protect our nuclear stockpiles, keep an eye out for future pandemics and fight wildfires. I for one am glad they are finding so much fraud and abuse. WTF

Just think of the tax dollars we can save if we defund cancer research labs!!

Just wondering if SCOTUS still thinks its a good idea that POTUS is not constrained by law. This White House seems intent on breaking as many laws as possible in the shortest amount of time

It's almost as if, when you fire competent people and replace them with incompetent loyalists, people get hurt. Who knew?

No worries. Who cares if daycare workers are put in a panic about losing paychecks due to Whitehouse blunders? It's not like billionaires are inconvenienced.

I'm not yet seeing how the new administration is lowering the price of eggs. It's as if bird flu ignores executive orders.

I was 8 or 9 when some older boys invited Dan and me to join them at dusk in a dairy barn in Iowa. We were to stand still in the dark. They switched on the lights and hundreds of rats scurried. I froze as they used bats to swat rats. I kind of feel the same way these days.

At a social studies teacher conference years ago I asked Jim Lehrer of the NewsHour what a journalist should do if he knows the interviewee is lying. Lehrer said he trusted the listener to sort truth from lies. I think that doesn't work in the current information ecology.

Example of Quisling Journalism: Mike Johnson was lying when he said we needed to spend whatever it takes to deport immigrants to limit a crime wave. There is no immigrant crime wave. Mike Johnson knew it. The journalist shouldn't have let that lie go unchallenged.

Quisling Journalism: acting as if the load of horseshit a public servant is dishing out isn't a load of horseshit when you know it, the liar knows it, and any sentient listener knows it. Good journalism would call it out immediately, every time. Silence is violence.

The lies are not accidental. They test the loyalty of the sycophants who know they are lies but pretend they are gospel. They keep journalists off balance. We shouldn't expect fewer lies going forward. Lying is central to the power game he's playing.

Question: would people who knew nothing about Dylan have an overall positive or negative opinion about him after seeing A Complete Unknown? Were the women better or worse off for having known him?
January 16, 2025 at 8:41 AM
Who did you spot in the Dylan movie? I think I saw Maria Muldahr, Dave Von Ronk, Odetta, Mother Maybelle, Peter Yarrow, Mary Travers, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Mama Cass?, ... missing The Clancy Bros, Ramblin Jack Elliot, Carolyn Hester, John Sebastian, Leadbelly, Ginsberg... Who else?

Benign or threatening? How do you read it? Also, which fictional character comes to mind?

What's your best question of the day? I love the Ted Lasso idea of replacing judgement with curiosity. There are so many cool questions we could consider.

The LA fires show how weak our systems thinking is. We waste time arguing about who is to blame. Decades ago ecologists predicted the fires. No one is to blame unless we all are for failing to heed climate science.

Seeing Systems: A basic truth. We are all connected. Which means all systems are connected. Which means it only makes sense to see ourselves as our brothers' keepers. We should want to change systems which hurt our neighbors.
