Many years ago, I went to Chicago for a conference and had never been there before. I rode the L from Midway to downtown by myself and checked in to my hotel. I went out for Giordano’s and to visit the sky deck of the Willis Tower. It was at dusk and the city was so pretty. Solidarity.

Guys go outside and enjoy a flower or a pet, or any nice good thing and stop obsessing over hoping TFG was dead and being sad he’s not. Seriously, dip into a hobby for everyone’s sanity and post on that.

On Thursday, a mom deer and three fawns were in my yard. It was neat.

I just tried and it would not allow submissions to post.

So I resolved to get something for Emily to replace her place of bliss. And I found a doggy pop up shelter on Chewy and a bed at homegoods and here we are. Tricked out Cabana for one 7.5 lb cat.

Then cataclysm- a freak downpour did come within the same week I put the new canopy on, and broke the tent frame. :(

In happier times, the people sized pop up tent cabana was Emily’s back yard surveillance spot.

For Juneteenth, I have the WPA narrative of Minerva Bendy, freedwoman, who had been enslaved by a 4x great grandfather of mine, Lazarus Goolsbee, whose sons fought for Confederacy and may have taken an enslaved man with them. Mrs. Bendy recalls being walked from GA to Woodville, TX in the 1850s.

Celebrating 12 years since I adopted baby Nico. He was a tiny guy at 1.585 lbs, and he had an infection when I got him, but he survived and now he’s 23.8 lbs.

He kept me through a lot of disappointments and difficult times.

Having a pleasant birthday walk and sit on the porch with my tiniest girl, Emily jumping porch rails behind me.

I got myself a little bittle birthday cake because why not find joy even in unprecedented times. This is 41.

Five years ago, I defended my dissertation on zoom during the pandemic. There was no graduation that year so we did photos in nature instead of on a campus. I’m not sure if my having earned a PhD matters or if I will ever have a job because of it again, but I’m happy I got it done.

Pretty awesome as far as I can tell! My mountains are a bit shorter!

We did sunrise at this site for my birthday last year.

Our neighbor’s cat, a white and brown ragdoll named Atticus, hiding under a blue tarp with wide eyes anticipating that Emily will attack him since she cornered him in there. His expression is all of us USians tonight going 👀 to everything.

Because everything is especially dumb or cruel, here is a short video of my smallest cat, Emily, who is tied for youngest with her sister, jumping onto a large 39” across tree stump from an elevation of -3-4 feet below the stump and 2.5 feet distant. Emily is small but a force, often of chaos.

It’s my cat son’s 12th birthday. Nicolo, The Great has always had a big personality and an intrepid spirit. He loves sitting outside, eating grass, and taking majestic poses.
