Yeah, there's some meta stuff with them going on for sure but it's kinda being presented like how UT contrasts multiple runs. Doing a non-optional boss run might help fill in the motive for doing the other routes.

You can always play the game without the optional bosses to get the gist, then go back and do them. I'm considering that after stalling out on the secret ch3 boss.
