5/7 The ongoing issues posed by the camps require continuing attention, including preparations to receive repatriated populations & improving camp living conditions.

2/7 In short, these are the results regarding how the narratives broke down:

Hedayah's special edited volume, Chelsea Daymon
and I examine pro-Daesh fundraising campaigns and the narratives these online sources employ to elicit donations on Telegram and TechHaven.

Reminder: “During his first term as president, [Trump] tried to ban the app. In an executive order issued in August 2020, Trump claimed the app was capturing mass amounts of information about Americans & leaving it vulnerable to the Chinese government.”

3/4 Oftentimes, any possible dissenters are promptly removed (as shown by the below screenshot from a pro-IS women’s group chat) & the pro-IS communities become a sort of filtering system.

1/4 In my nearly 6 years of observing pro-IS online spaces, I’ve encountered countless instances where IS supporters seek to control info access. They tell fellow supporters to avoid mosques & unapproved scholars bc they know isolation works in their favor:

Really excited all the books have arrived! Got them via a combo of the resource budget from work and gifts from family/friends 📚

Time to spend this winter holiday NOT wasting time online and enjoying these (ngl prob will still spend too much time on my phone though because I’m a bit addicted)

6/7 In 2022, the group admin created sub-groups for children & encouraged parents to have their kids join through their own accounts. I did not enter either of these groups but this shows persistent efforts to directly involve children & introduce them to this online community.
December 16, 2024 at 7:40 PM
5/7 Much of the content posted in the group was also not militant. Examples incl. general religious guidance, maths practice, phonics resources, & Arabic language textbooks. Members shared advice on how to help their children enjoy the learning process. But there was also this:
December 16, 2024 at 7:40 PM
4/7 It's important to state that not all members of the group can be assumed to align with the admin(s) and in fact, one person was quickly kicked out of the chat after she criticised Musa Jibril and ISIS. H8ers not allowed!
December 16, 2024 at 7:40 PM
3/7 However, within a month, the admin account shared content from Ahmad Musa Jibril providing more insight into the ideological affiliation of the admin(s) and, by extension, the purpose of the group.

4/4 Also, the Hamas/ISIS equivalencies REALLY need to stop (especially that #HamasIsISIS hashtag):

3/4 Amplifying dichotomous narratives, dehumanising rhetoric, justifying the unjustifiable concept of collective punishment, & equating civilians w/ terrorist groups or the actions of their gov only fosters dangerous environments both from within & far beyond the conflict zone.
