More than loose ends. After 1800 pages and 20 years (for the three), it seems like he'd despaired of the whole thing, decided he was never going to finish it, and gave up trying. His editor should have sent it back again, but I guess he'd given up by that point as well.

Unfortunately, it seems that after 1800 pages the author got fed up with it all. Who really cares what happens to everyone else anyway? Just fly Lyra to Mount Doom on the back of an eagle. Have someone shoot the evil president in the head. The End. Will that do? Sure, fine, whatever.

Just one thought: Why is 1% always the go-to figure? Why not 10% or 20%? Or 50%? Reduce billionaires to half-billionaires. It's still a shed load of money. Far more than anyone needs.
