Huge Ancient Red Worker
@malcolmsheppard.bsky.social
Writer, RPG designer/developer and weirdly enough, semiprofessional swordsman. Currently primarily engaged by Green Ronin but all opinions my own.
We've really come full circle with @jessebrown.bsky.social and @canadaland.com though. What started as a rigorous alternative to establishment media ends in Jesse playing sycophant for Barbara Kay's kid in his racist playhouse.

Important @jessebrown.bsky.social update: Jesse now feels you should collaborate with transphobes and supporters of pseudoscientific racism as well as ignoring Nazis.

What's happening here is that as a supporter of Israel with no particular concern for Canadian Jews beyond Zionist rhetoric, you've decided to engage in inflammatory white supremacist content. Do you care about state-linked violent Diagolon antisemites? Atomwaffen Nazi terrorists? Groypers? No.

Now, it's also filled with problematic bullshit (90s US gang-centric racism), though it feels more like knowing parody in the vein of a Paul Verhoeven film. In fact, yeah: It's a hint that there should have been a generation of Verhoevens taking the piss.

Predator 2 is deliberately set in a very near for the time late 90s future that exaggerates the politics, media, and culture of the time--including movies. Danny Glover gets ripped. Morton Downey Junior plays his tabloid TV self. It's a British-Jamaican director's funhouse mirror of 90s America.

Prey is the least offensive Predator movie, which does count for something (although the OG Predator partly works because of the irony that special forces are getting ganked as if they're victims of the Global South death squads they are and support). But P2 gets that it's all a bit silly.

(That's the ep. the Queen Mother tried to ban.)

Watching the most controversial episode, "Death by Moonlight." Canadians were duped into bombing civilian targets by Arthur "Bomber" Harris. Command hid their 1/3 survival rate while attempting to conceal deaths, including the number of corpses that made in back to base. Tail Gunners were worst off.

This was basically the last gasp of what nationally supported media in Canada could accomplish, forging history, journalism, and dramatic tools to tell a challenging story while maintaining independence. We don't have that anymore.

Six day ban for nonviolent speculation.

...it could stand more self awareness about that when it's being played around with.

I think finding out what people really mean and how that evolves can tell us more than codifying the thing. History checks the facts and updates itself; a dictionary entry is a best summary, fixed in time or updated with new approximations. And really, theory does cycle through regularly, but...
