I report and run projects on the Visual Investigations team at The New York Times where we collect and analyze audio-visual evidence. Ireland and New York. nytimes.com/visual-investigations

Mohammed al Bardawil, a young witness to the attack on medics who we interviewed in Gaza, was killed at the weekend when an Israeli gunboat fired on Rafah beach. His father Saeed asked our colleague Bilal Shbair today for a photo of them together when Bilal interviewed them.

New high res satellite imagery shows the extent of damage to a market in Toura, northern Darfur after the Sudanese Armed Forces bombed it on Monday. One witness counted four airstrikes.

Many of the Jan. 6 rioters pardoned by Trump on Monday violently attacked police. But his grant of clemency does not erase the video evidence.

I was struck in Louisville by the intense anger toward and mistrust of the police. And the prevalence of guns - due to liberal licensing and open carry gun laws (giffords.org/lawcenter/gu...).

"Gold has been looted from homes, seized at checkpoints or stolen from banks, sometimes by fighters using metal detectors to ferret it out."

A recent video showed RSF fighters distributing gold jewelry looted during the paramilitary group’s campaign to seize control of Sudan.

As Declan writes, the mines are so important to the RSF that they are now a military target. Sudan's air force bombed the area last year and again in January, killing civilians, according to news reports. Videos taken after one strike shows people scrambling for safety as a fire blazes nearby.

Around the plant are hundreds if not thousands of artisanal mines as well as larger mechanized digs, which have expanded since March 2023.

In the heart of Africa, and to Sudan's south, is the Al Juneid gold processing plant, patrolled by Rapid Support Forces fighters and with Russian employees stationed behind high walls. Images from Maxar show expanded activity around the plant since the RSF seized it 18 months ago.

Vote counting underway at Limerick Racecourse. At a booth for each community, volunteers lay ballots out, read aloud the name of the candidate who received the first preference, while another volunteer tabulates those votes. Many votes cast for Limerick County's three incumbents. #ge24

Data shows the scale of Democrats’ rebuke in the 11 largest U.S. cities. The map below shows a big swing for Trump in Detroit’s majority Arab precincts, an apparent indictment of Biden’s support for Israel’s war on Gaza. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Archival ftw again: Friendly Chevrolet confirms it was Lemmon Ave. tinyurl.com/2s3d7s55

And the current day Friendly Chevy site: "In 1960, Roy became part owner and relocated the dealership to the then 'far north' part of Dallas at the corner of Lemmon and Inwood"

A treat for those who made it to the end. Footage of JFK's motorcade on Lemmon Ave. filmed by Mr. Carpenter earlier in the day.

Anyway, just some of the checks we do before running images. By identifying where the video was filmed, the time of day, the Dallas skyline in 1963, we could say the images were legit. Where the photos were taken matched Mr. Carpenter's story, and the reel was also the tech of the day.

Two of the skyscrapers are still standing but obscured by the present day skyline. But float up on Google Maps and track the line of sight back: the location tallies.

A little digging around Google Images and Flickr turned up this archival shot of Dallas in 1963. Bingo.

(I'd link to the Flickr image but the site is down.)

So, maybe around here – a slip road to the freeway. This matches another video frame showing the freeway width and the crest of a bridge in the background.

Can we confirm? The Dallas skyline in 2024 is nothing like 1963. And did the freeway exist then?

Time: The length of the shadow matches what it should be around that time of day on Nov. 22, 1963, Suncalc tells us.

Location: Where on the route was it taken? The angle of sun also helps to narrow that down: most likely this section of the North Stemmon's Freeway. www.suncalc.org#/32.8014,-96...

The first video frame above shows the motorcade after JFK had been shot. The upright figure is probably secret service agent Clint Hill protecting them as they drove from Dealey Plaza to Parkland Hospital. www.jfk.org/the-site/mot...
