Replace the pain induced by the need to refuse the thing with the joy of observing its beauty or skillfulness it presents.
One useful habit to break free from the need to have, is appreciating the beauty or craftsmenship of the thing, feeling joy of existence of the design or tech skill simply by taking a glance at it. But also being highly sober that the item probably either doesn't suit you or you just don't need it.

Don't really have a choice, it is a matter of survival of our species, because producing all these consumer things cost a lot to our environment.
