I think a bit. absolutely struggled with history dates, but easily understood the events and causes and effects. I sucked at memorizing timestables in math.

and I understand why people think that is small talk, because trying to engage with "hi" dms gets you a lot of the same phrases and patterns you'd get from actual small talk. I know why people make that connection, they see the pattern elsewhere in normal conversation and draw the wrong conclusions

exactly how it feels. but I do want to stress that it's very likely (based on my conversations with other "small talk haters" throughout my life) that this is what a lot of neurodivergent people think small talk is.
so I understand folks getting mad at being called various things for it.

I guess, but seeing comments like "smalltalk haters are classists" or "if you hate smalltalk you also hate foreplay" and maybe those are just jokes, but god does it feel fucking bad to read these things before realising that nobody is talking about the same thing and none of it fucking matters

like genuinely I think people who say they hate small talk are talking about that kind of thing, and are, in the normal contexts that small talk actually happens, enjoy it just like any other human being. I say this as a professional autistic misunderstander.

I guess I'm not gonna make character judgements on that kind of thing, even if I hate it. but I have learned my lesson, people want you dead if you say you don't like small talk, so I should make sure I have my definitions absolutely correct or I won't be spared when the revolution comes.

it's an initiation of small talk, by definition. they are testing the waters, looking for a connection, signifiers that I'm friendly to engage with. but it's clearly different here somehow.
for years I'd tell people I hate smalltalk and I meant this. didn't realize I was being judged for it.

I've been reading this whole thread and realized we all have completely different definitions of what small talk is and what it does. I hate getting DMs that just say "hi" and having to labor through it to get them to ask the question they were going to anyway. I like talking about someone's day
