The Ballad of Wallace Island includes multiple gothic tropes: obsession, toxic nostalgia, isolated location, old Manor house, dead wife, 'backward' rural community.
But its positive undertone keeps it from falling into gothic depair. It is almost anti-gothic

While perhaps not traditionally gothic, Piranesi engages with a variety of gothic tropes. It is full of mystery, the occult, ancient powers, and, of course, the ocean.
An excellently crafted tale of how humans relate to the world around them.

Christmas reading 🎅💀 While this book echoes or maybe shadows The Secret History, it stands on its own. Interesting characters, suspenseful story, and beautiful writing - this is a joy to read.

Another pick from our fiction rec list. Angela Carter's retellings of various fairytales are brutal, brilliant and, of course, bloody. An easy read but with plenty of depth. Probably the perfect stocking filler, really.
