Olympus OM-2 (released in 1975)

A cleverly designed compact SLR that sacrifices nothing for small size. Auto exposure works by monitoring light reflected from the film surface during exposure. This new idea was widely adopted for automatic TTL flash control.

Canon EF (released in 1973)

Shutter priority autoexposure via analog electronics. A conservative design that still works in manual exposure if the electronics fail. A solid, well built camera. Operates in a similar manner to the microcontroller based AE-1 of 1976.

Fujica ST901 (released in 1974)

Aperture priority auto exposure SLR. Exposure control is pure analog, with A/D conversion used for the famous LED display. The display cannot render common shutter speed fractions such as 125 and 250, so uses 1oo and 2oo instead.

Aires 35-V (released in 1958)

The Aires 35-V is an interchangeable lens rangefinder camera. Well made, with a modern design that hints at the SLRs that would soon make it obsolete. Main problem: a rangefinder viewfinder is difficult to use with longer lenses.

Nikon FTn (released in 1968)

Photomic FTn full aperture TTL metering viewfinder is connected to the shutter speed knob, and to the aperture ring via "rabbit ears." Maximum aperture is detected by cycling the aperture ring back and forth after mounting a new lens.

Canon T90 (released in 1986)

Canon's most computerized manual focus SLR with a FD lens mount. A design and engineering study for the soon to come autofocus EOS cameras. Rounded edge body design established the 90's SLR look.

Nikon D3s (released in 2009)

Reaching deeply into low light with a full frame CMOS sensor, the D3s was one of the first digital cameras to clearly outperform 35mm film. Today's high resolution cameras have abandoned the gentle image rendering of the D3s.

Pentax K-1000 (released in 1976)

A well known photography student SLR. Pentax kept it simple with manual operation. A 1960's era TTL analog CdS meter works surprisingly well in good lighting conditions. No off switch, lens cap on saves the battery.
