🚨 The government is preparing a new Elections Bill, promising to strengthen Britain's democracy.

But it currently fails to address the elephant in the room: the voting system.

We're asking the Democracy Minister @samanthadixonmp.bsky.social to fix this.

"First Past the Post doesn't represent the British people and doesn't give voice to their concerns." @eddavey.libdems.org.uk

Inside and outside of Parliament, there's a growing cross-party consensus: our voting system is not working.

It's time to scrap it. 🚮

"Proportional Representation [is] no longer the subject of an abstract discussion on the margins, but an urgent and compelling proposition supported across our party."

The Commons is now in recess until 11th November.

Of the 344 divisions held so far this session, 169 would have changed result if seats matched votes. That is, ~49% of the time, opposition MPs represented *more* people but the government won anyway.

We deserve better than governments that 2/3 of the public voted against, or MPs that 3/4 of their constituents didn't choose.

We deserve better than to be ignored over and over again, because of where we live or who we support.

We all deserve better than First Past the Post.

"It’s spooky season, and we know what’s really spooky. Being haunted by a government that two-thirds of people didn’t vote for - and the spectre of an even less popular one waiting to take its place. Millions of voices unheard, buried in a graveyard of wasted votes."
It's Halloween and Westminster is looking spooky... 🎃💀

"I wonder how many people are prepared to play by the system in the future, when you take into account that (...) 1 in 5 of the nation actually voted for the government."

It was great to speak to Nigel Evans about why he changed his mind about electoral reform, and how FPTP undermines trust.

Voters want real choice. We need a proportional voting system that makes it possible.

Great post by Livvy. Fixing the planet needs long-term thinking, and only with proportional voting systems do you get continuity instead of combat in our parliamentary systems. PR is an #Equality party policy.

We're hearing it in Caerphilly today. We've heard it a million times before.

Under PR, we could just vote for whoever we support - and every vote would count. Sounds better, doesn't it?

And as a result, since the 2024 election, votes on legislation in the Commons have been heavily distorted 👇😲

Today marks one year since the 2024 General Election.

Of the 252 divisions held since, 120 would have changed result if seats matched votes.

That is, ~48% of the time, opposition MPs represented more voters, but the government won anyway 🤷‍♀️

"In the 2024 election, 85% of seats were won on less than half the vote, up from 35% in 2019.

Since 1945 just 19 seats have been won at general elections with less than 30% of the vote.

Ten of those were in 2024." @samfr.bsky.social

Are you comfortable with a party supported by a small minority winning total power? It’s time for a politics that reflects the people.
We demand:

❌No more First Past the Post elections.

✅A proportional system where seats match votes.

Our democracy is in crisis. 6 in 10 people are now represented by an MP they did not vote for. We have a government that won a landslide on just a third of the vote. 🧵

Five parties on 15% or more. This is unprecedented in UK politics.

What it shows:

✅ No single party can speak for the whole country.

✅ Voters want real choice - not the lesser evil.

✅ British society has moved on from the two-party era. Now our voting system must follow.
Our latest Westminster voting intention (19-20 Oct) has the Greens on their highest figure ever recorded by YouGov

Reform UK: 26% (-1 from 12-13 Oct)
Labour: 20% (=)
Conservatives: 17% (=)
Lib Dems: 15% (-1)
Greens: 15% (+2)
SNP: 4% (+1)
