Sunrise in Makakilo this morning
January 20, 2026 at 5:07 PM
Looking like it might be approaching 300 m / 1000 ft. in height. Not much wind today so some tephra is falling near the closest camera (V3).

We're in Hilo for the rest of the week helping out at the Pacific Tsunami Museum. It's across the street from Hilo Bay, where you can still see evidence of last month's #tsunami . We also set up a new Raspberry Shake seismograph in Mountain View and it recorded its first earthquake last night.

Tsunami Advisories (offshore hazard alerts) remain in effect for Hawaii and parts of North America, and here's why: The tsunami is still active, just not as big, and can still cause weird rip currents and other marine hazards. Here's current sea-level data from Kahului, Maui, and Crescent City, CA.

For those of you following along at home, a useful site for measuring tsunamis is tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov

Here's the latest from Midway Atoll, but this is a rapidly evolving situation.
