I can't imagine that many people would want to listen to 25 minutes of me feebly mumbling questions at John Peel about Captain Beefheart and him answering them, but I just found the cassette of the recording (made in 1992) so I thought I'd Put It Out There.

Martin Amis's big three novels - Money, London Fields and The Information - coming to Vintage Classics this month, introduced by Andrew O'Hagan, Rachel Cusk and James Wood respectively.

I like the London Fields cover best. The Information marred by its bookalike status (see my bookalikes thread).

Which judge resigned because the books were "mere pornography"? Which author, according to another judge, "puts one off sex"? Which book did Saul Bellow dismiss as a "tinkling teacup thing"? Who refused to give the prize to a book about cannibalism?

I wrote about the Booker Prize in the 1970s:
The Booker in the 1970s: 10 novels that are well worth rediscovering, five decades later | The Booker Prizes
The Booker shortlists of the 1970s are of exceptionally high quality, and while some of the novels may have fallen out of fashion, they’re essential volumes for any keen reader’s library

There are days when I think a record collector’s life is nothing but the slow trek to rediscover, through the detours of art, another singer who combined pop, soul, rock, folk, jazz, rhythm & blues and cabaret as perfectly as Bobbie Gentry.

We have had two great catastrophes. 1. My pants went overboard into the water. 2. Aunt Pearl's hat did the same. The hat we rescued, the pants we could not & did not.
