First past the post makes it much harder to switch over in the UK and US

Why the US needs ranked choice voting
November 17, 2025 at 4:53 PM
The two oldest "democracies" (US and UK) have of course the most outdated political systems (e.g. first past the post and undemocratic upper houses). It's called first-mover DISadvantage. Most recent democracies have much better structures.

Trump wants generals to resign so he can replace them with flunkies. The only question is what they do if asked to disobey their oath to the constitution.

What happens if you have ALREADY built a factory

So well said. Arteta set up to pressure City and avoid the early goal. And then the early goal came and, as you say, City gave up. Hindsight is wonderful.

I suspect the Calafiori experiment (dropping into midfield) will soon end. Hincape will become the overlapping winger and Eze will be the extra midfielder!
September 17, 2025 at 10:44 PM
Is the modern tactical tendency to defend against a winger one-on-one and use the spare player to pack the triangle in front of the goal.

Have never seen Merino sky a ball into the stands. Most players miss 'sitters' because they get excited, lean back and blast it over the bar. He has a relentless focus on keeping the ball down and forcing the keeper to save.

The more frequently politicians are in the sights of the electorate, the better. Better short-termism than arrogance and complacency.

Liverpool won the league last season with the first-time ball over the top to Salah. Teams taking that away now. E.G. Newcastle played a deep backline and left a big gap to pressing forwards. Slot has to reinvent this side. Can he do so?

I suspect (don't quote me, I'm an Australian) that the DOJ is seeking a writ of certiorari / mandamus to quash the decision because there are no formal appeal rights, in which case they would have to join the judges themselves as defendants (as a matter of form, anyway).

Everybody got to vote for their favourite candidate AND stop Cuomo. No need for tactical voting.
June 25, 2025 at 3:18 AM
Note that Lander could run and not worry about being a spoiler because of Ranked Choice Voting!

The great strength of RCV. Mamdani and those philosophically aligned hugely outnumber Cuomo. Hence, he's getting crushed.

The great strength of RCV. Mamdani and other candidates philosophically aligned to him clearly outnumber Cuomo.

You are using computer counting. In Australia there is hand counting so the party scrutineers are watching the count and preference allocation the whole time. Less chance of claiming a computer stitch-up.
June 25, 2025 at 1:27 AM
Oh, and this is all done with hand-counting. No computers. So party scrutineers watching the count, on the night, would work out very fast which way the preferences are flowing to the main candidates. MIght be a lot harder with computers though, I suppose.
June 25, 2025 at 1:20 AM
In Australia (RCV for a century), in ever electorate, the Electoral Commission does an informal "throw" on the night. It guesses who will be the final two candidates and then works out their preference split. Unless it makes the wrong guess, it is clear who will win after formal counting.

Newsom's statement seems very important because it establishes an anti-fascist counter-narrative and will stop other politicians from self-censorship. Trump will hate it.

How important is the UK nuclear deterrent in its present negotiations with Europe? Is the EU hoping to come under its umbrella? Does it give the UK extra leverage. Just asking.

An interesting side effect of the white Australia policy (which I am not defending) is that Australia never imported an serious underclass. Australian women had to cook and clean for themselves, etc etc. Did that create a egalitarian ethos?

Beating up kids in a school playground is not as good as losing a world title fight.
