It's really sad to see this rapid backtracking, especially when, in Equinor's own words, "Electrification of long-lifespan installations is the most effective and cost-efficient measure for achieving the parliamentary resolution of halving CO2 emissions from the NCS by 2030"

Work is in progress on the first of these electrification projects, and work was due to start working on the now-cancelled second two in the next few weeks.

For example, powering Norway's offshore platforms is estimated to account for 25% of the entire country's greenhouse gas emissions. The plan to electrify platforms means running them on 100% renewable energy (in Norway's case, reliable hydro power).

This latest development sees them even cancelling plans to electrify (green) the power supply to their existing North Sea assets. This matters because simply keeping oil and gas assets running needs a lot of power and creates a lot of greenhouse emissions.
