I didn’t stop them, didn’t see the deception. Guilt and resentment choke me—guilt for my cowardice, resentment for their blind loyalty. I can’t undo my unforgivable mistakes, but I’ll dedicate my life to redemption, sacrificing myself to atone for all we did wrong.

I hate myself for it, for not stopping him, for not screaming that his life was worth more than any cause. And worse, I resent him—God help me, I do—for making me feel this guilt, for leaving me to drown in what I didn’t do.
