August You know you will die, of course you do. But you picture it as a place you've been before, perhaps many years ago, as a child. Old floorboards worn smooth, punctuated by nails. The corner desk with all the small drawers. The others are here somewhere too. In the kitchen, or out on the porch. A meadow slopes down to the lake, with a path mowed through it. In the daytime, yellow butterflies blink over the grass. At night, the moon closer than you ve ever seen— And the bedsheets holding a faint odor of the lake. You think of it like this. Like some version of the past, but lasting a very long time. You imagine you're ready. You have your little shovel and pail.

Returning to this China Miéville quote: "we live in a utopia: it just isn't ours."
It is not as if the world has not long, long been one in which vast numbers live in dystopian depredation. The horizon is more visible now to many who had thought themselves insulated, if they thought about it at all. And dystopia for some is utopia for others. To repeat something I have said elsewhere, we live in a utopia: it just isn't ours.
