We also had 4 tetrad dissection microscopes join the lab this week, as part of the @uw-nsc.bsky.social renewal! These belonged to Matt Kaeberlein as part of their large scale efforts to measure replicative lifespan in yeast. We are now offering them as loaners for labs who want to try lifespans.

Had a great time collaborating with artist argot chen this week as part of the inaugural Sxaffold scientist/artist encounter. We made Mt. Rainier from agar using a 3D printed mold, then painted with colorful yeast strains www.sxaffold.org

Microbiologists, check out this genius trick for orienting flat toothpicks that comes from the legendary Beth Jones by way of Bonny Brewer. Video taken by my lab manager, Emily.

Validating all my lab hoarding instincts, we just came up with a use for these tiny glass Petri dishes that I saved from the Botstein lab lo many years ago. Turns out the shipping date on the box was 1960 to Stanford, so now I’m very curious who David got them from!

Also: there will be stickers (thanks @reneegeck.bsky.social for the design!)

Lab milestone: we ran out of sterile toothpicks! The cause is this photo, which is a mixture of GFP labeled & wt yeast. You can zoom in to see a nice “single colony” that’s really a mix. You get away with one streak most of the time, but an extra colony purification is safer!

Awesome new addition to my office plants collection: a bioluminescent petunia! It’s not quite as bright as the picture shows, but it’s totally visible. Thanks @bethkarenmartin (twitter handle) for coordinating the bulk buy!

3 cheers for #TAGC24! What a great meeting, and hats off to the organizers at all levels. Looks like I should have set aside an entire extra week to watch all the talks and look at all the posters I missed though.

What fun to be the guest speaker at the Master Brewers Association Western Canada District BC Winter Technical Session! Got a private tour of the super cool Molson Coors brewery in Chilliwack too. These are the yeast tanks! That’s probably the most yeast I’ve ever been in the presence of!

So far my most impactful action as interim chair has been making a pets channel on the department slack. Mitzi is not impressed.

Found these awesome tetrad earrings at a craft fair this weekend, just in time for my lab holiday party.

Pretty awesome to get a custom beer made in your honor when you step down as chair. Congrats, Stan! (The QR code even goes to the yeast 2 hybrid paper!)

Scientist dance party is back at @YeastCourseCSHL but I will admit I kind of miss partying with the scientist photos in Bush

Please help solve a mystery! I'm working on a long-suffering book chapter, & we're at the copyright approvals part. We had been using this figure about the yeast life cycle, but no one can remember the original source. 0 results on reverse image search! Look familiar to anyone?

Made it to the tail end of @YeastCourseCSHL with my TA Joe. And thankfully our hundreds of canavanine plates survived their trip across the country too. Fluctuation assay here we come.
