The criteria are based on the dormancy period, which varies by asset type. For bank accounts, the dormancy period is five years. If no contact or transactions occur within this time, the property is considered abandoned. Holders, such as banks, must attempt to locate owners by sending notices to their last known address. If these efforts fail, the property is reported and remitted to the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office. Holders are required to file annual reports detailing unclaimed properties to ensure transparency.
