I've yet to see one of these maps get North African Arabic right - Atay (Morocco), te: (Tunisia)

I thought they were more a characterisation of Westerners seen from Asia (the clue's in the name Ferengi perhaps), esp East India company...

That's how I analysed it as a child - I used to say "I better go, bettern't I?" till I was 6 or 7
