McKercher's latest is *actually* a Christmas movie and shot in Calgary (the Victorian house is at Heritage Park) but #YYC is standing in for Generic American City in this not-a-Hallmark movie that is very unlike her other films and the first one she didn't write. It's fine for the genre.

I appreciated how Gillian McKercher embraced bleak suburban Calgary winter as a whole mood. Technically a Christmas movie! Charles Hamilton's long lens shots compressed familiar neighbourhoods into new, intriguing places.

I saw it at North Hill Cinema, where Episode 1 was the last show before the theatre was torn down. I fondly recall the DTS sound, gold curtains, and greasy head marks on the back wall. This is a still from a news story about the closing so these folks were queued for Ep 1. (from CinemaTreasures.org)

If you are looking for a low-energy outdoor activity, now is the season for counting eagles as they soar along this ridge in Kananaskis. All you need is binoculars and patience in finding eagle-shaped dots. More info at eaglewatch.ca (The Samoyeds belong to one of the volunteer observers)
