They realize they have more in common than they ever dare to admit. This is why they're always poking at one another. They're bros. If there was anyone Khal was happy to meet in DT it was Thancred. The whole race against one another made the whole trial fun.

In ShB Khal understood Thancred's vitriol, for the first time he saw the very feelings he himself was struggling with. When he aknowledged this by the end of ShB, it helped Thancred come to terms with everything. EW just wraps everything up for them.

Khal considers Thancred his best friend. Of the Scions, Thancred is the only one who knows Khal and Haurchefant were together. Thancred was the first to know Khal was in love with Imyril. And when Khal got his body highjacked by Zenos, it was with Thancred and Y'Shtola that he confided.

Nothing like pouring one's heart out over a few ales to let bygones be bygones. The next day, both hangover, Khal tells Thancred make a small deal. Ever since then they're best friends.

So, the night they return to the Source, they celebrate. Khal and Thancred go drink outside, Khal gets drunk for the first time in ever, Thancred too and Thancred makes the one question he should not: "You're tired, aren't you?"

If no one asks, Khal does not have to aknowledge how he feels. So, while they wait to return to the Source, Khal often hangs out with the two on the Empty, Lakeland or the Crystarium. Thancred is a perceptive man, and he starts realizing Khal's silence has never been arrogance. The man is exhausted.

At this point Khal kinda avoids the twins and G'Raha when he can and prefers to hang out with Thancred, because Thancred still kinda loaths him and Urianger is on thin ice, so he knows they won't hovering over him if he's okay. Khal's emotional state is on thin ice, so Thancred's silence is safe.

This stark change from the arrogant asshole ready to remind him he was "Hydaelinn's chosen" to "just an adventurer" who wants to help as many as he can, no aggressive comebacks, no arrogance, completely disarms Thancred. The Khal he knew would never call himself "Alphinaud's Assistant", yet he did.

Things change in the First. For Thancred it's been 10 years. Thancred is in dad mode, when he sees the Khal again, he takes a deep breath, ready for that verbal confrontation the two always had Khal. He's gonna ignore Khal. But then he's met with calm and patience.

It does not help that Khal is apathetic during StB, and Thancred wrongfully believes Khal is being his arrogant self, too good to care that he just cost the Scions eevrything, he's Hydaelinn's chosen. Most certainly not the WoL about to have a depressive meltdown.

This is only made worse when he realizes Minfilia was sacrificed to save the First, and the vitriol turns into full blown hatred.

Queue in the events after ARR and all of HW, and when they meet againThancred noticed something had changed, but he was too angry to fully register it. Plus, they had the WoD to deal with. Thancred blamed Khal for everything that happened.

When they first met Thancred couldn't stand Khal. By the end of ARR, between Alphi and mister "I'm Hydaelinn's favourite princess and the most interesting guy in the world" Thancred could not tell which one of the two was more insufferable. Gods, talk about a broom up one's ass!

He has learned to control most of his tail, I mean, if you compare ARR tail to DT, DT tail isn't as expressive, but the Scions have learned to tell his irritation by his tail.

The idea of 'soulmates' disturbs him. The idea of the person his soul is bound spending eternity thinking of when he'll show up, because fate isn't always kind. He much likes the freedom of people just falling in love because love happens.
