For those still alive, I can't imagine how disheartening it is to see the very rhetoric employed to drag the world into that terrible conflict resurfacing again in the present day. To see how people from their generation and their kids' generation are falling for that same rhetoric decades later.

His brother, my great uncle, was a bombardier on board a Lancaster bomber in the RAF. My maternal grandfather used to do mechanical work on Lancasters (he and his buddy actually got demoted for falling asleep inside some tires for the planes lol). My great uncle on mom's side served in North Africa.

With that in mind, my heart goes out especially to the surviving veterans of the Second World War. I never got to know my paternal grandfather because he died of alcoholism-related complications decades before I was born. It was, in part, a coping mechanism for the horrors he witnessed in WWII.

It serves as a somber reminder of the human cost of armed conflict. We may enjoy playing historical war games, but that shouldn't blind us to the very real suffering in war. If anything, it should serve as a way to remember why history played out the way it did so we can learn from our mistakes.

The Great War was, at the time, the most costly and brutal conflict in history. Remembrance Day is about remembering the sacrifices made by ordinary people who put their lives on the line to defend our way of life, not only in the Great War but in all the wars preceding and since then.
