As the Max Kade Visiting Professor at Columbia, I was due to give a public lecture during Spring Term that I had to cancel after the abduction and arrest of Mahmoud Khalil by ICE/DHS agents and Columbia’s failure to offer any protection for its students.

I cancelled my attendance in a big German Studies conference this week in light of the lack of meaningful opposition to Germany's role in the destruction of Gaza across the discipline, including its proudly progressive associations/groups (@ddgc.bsky.social being the only exception I know of)
feeling some kind of way about the german studies statements in solidarity with us colleagues and students now, but never when they were arrested on the same campuses during palestine encampments last year, now, but never - never - with palestinian colleagues in gaza
