He doesn't really know how to fix what's happening, so his goal has so far just been to find a new forest for him and his little spirit buddies.

He also assumes that there must be other spirits out there pretending to be mortals and will just (somewhat randomly and often incorrectly) pick someone he thinks is in on his little ruse

On the way, he's running a con selling candles, which are then inhabited by the spirits, who then steal small valuables and bring them back to Wick.
(He is somewhat aware that this is a really roundabout way of earning money, but does it anyways, because it makes the spirits feel useful/happier)
