It means he was surprised by the question because he didn't realize there were protests, and tried to make up something that sounds sympathetic but blamey about... whatever they're upset about. He's busy thinking about golf and grift, you can't expect him to remember that people exist.

Agree! The whole POINT of Faramir, as Tolkien said, was to show that truly good men didn't have to come from a special noble bloodline. He was meant to be Aragorn's equal. Eowyn, a leader herself, was drawn to men who were also good leaders. Her goal AND theirs was to see a world at peace.

Agree! The whole POINT of Faramir, as Tolkien said, was to show that truly good men didn't have to come from a special noble bloodline. He was meant to be Aragorn's equal. Eowyn, a leader herself, was drawn to men who were also good leaders. Her goal AND theirs was to see a world at peace.
