Professor for life. Preserve the Galapagos. I heart volcanoes.
The key is setting oneself apart from the crowd. At a liberal arts school with every opportunity, perhaps this is a pub. As would simply doing well earning a BS if one had to work their way through college at a public university.

I believe but do not know that the PhD direct is overrepresented by students from the wealthiest liberal arts schools. Good for us. But every good PhD student I had (and I could not be prouder) and many of my role models did an M.S. first, because they were unsure on how they wanted to focus.

I think more important: it excludes folks who are completing an M.S. and contemplating a Ph.D. In my generation (the mentors of many millenials), that was the majority, especially for people who did not initially have a strong academic bent.

Funny what cowards these jerks are when confronted. We all had classmates like them in grade school.

At what point will the resilience of the U.S. economy be overcome by these incompetent charlatans?

In 2004, it took many, many days to produce detailed tsunami models after the devastating Sumatra earthquake. Last night? Slip models were being produced and shared within hours. That’s federally funded science in action.
