Sorry, his employer kept him part time. The insurance company told the employer or the cost for the entire company would be doubled or tripled. I recall his wife saying she knew her daughter was dying. And, she said their other child couldn't get a minor surgery due to needing to spend down for aid.

Pre ACA, I saw a man get fired from a small company due to a child with cancer. The insurance company told them owner that he had to fire this man or force him to reduce hours so he would not be on the company plan. The man reduced his hours, going back to full time when his daughter died.

That was 12 years ago. I was happy to see the ACA, even though my treatment was done. I could switch insurance without increased payments. I could look for a job without my past entering into decision making.

Individual health insurance is pay more for less. After about 6 years of minimal usage by my family, I had cancer. In addition to what insurance paid, I had bills of over $100,000. I also couldn't work due to treatment or side effects for a couple years. I saw people quit treatment because of cost.

When I was going through chemo, a few patients said they were stopping treatment rather than bankrupt their families. At least, they had given treatment a few months to see if there was a benefit. But some people forego or delay treatment due to cost. And, those choices lead to worsened outcomes.

I recall speaking to the pharmacist in the Krakow Ghetto, one of my mother's cousins. When we asked about what he did, he simply said, "I did what I had to." We have to resist similar things now.

Important article. As an American physician who grew up knowing survivors of both German and Soviet atrocities during WWII, I would agree that those lessons should make us call out when we see similar things happening again.
