Magdalen College, Oxford has a large circulating library, a significant early printed & manuscript books collection, and an extensive archive.
The painting was purchased at a car boot sale in Bude, Cornwall, earlier this year. When the purchaser of the lily painting discovered it, they very kindly donated the photograph to our Archives. Good luck to those taking part in today's regatta.

who took the trophy after beating University College in the final. The team included Frederic Pocock Bulley, who was the son of Frederic Bulley (Magdalen College President, 1855-1885). The photo has an interesting back story. It was found in a picture frame, hidden behind a painting of a peace lily.

There's lots of scribblings out and amendments. In the second image, we can see where a scrap of paper has been sewn in to cover a section with a lot of crossings out. In the fourth image, we can see a fingerprint, perhaps left by Barker herself.

In the story, an American family, the Otises, move into an old English mansion which is haunted by the ghost of Sir Simon de Canterville. Fortunately for the Otis family, they don't find the ghost scary at all and eventually help him find peace. 👻🎃👻
