As we see reports of both federal and South Carolina state government plans for major tax cuts, I have to wonder who is going to pay for hurricane relief and so much more. SC is very dependent on federal handouts, receiving $3.17 for every $1.00 paid in taxes.

A 25% higher risk of mortality among more than half a million people in SC is a lot of unnecessarily dead people. If deaths in Gaza or from abortion bother you, these deaths in SC should too. The US is the only industrialized nation that does not provide health coverage to all of its citizens.

South Carolina has not expanded Medicaid. Further, Medicaid is at risk in the federal government. So, some numbers -- lack of insurance is associated with mortality (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...). In 2023, 521,660 SC residents under 65 lacked health insurance (rfa.sc.gov/data-researc...).

The problem isn’t that many Americans have lost faith in the Democratic Party. Parties have come and gone in the U.S. The problem is that too many citizens have lost faith in representative democracy.
